چکیده

Abstract. We present a set of observations on meltwater meandering rivulets ice and compare them (qualitatively quantitatively) to morphologies commonly found in channels different media. The include data from planned centimeter-scale experiments incidental self-formed millimeter-scale rivulets. Our show pulsed lateral migration features, undercut banks overhangs, meander bend skewness, cutoffs. also well with planform characteristics alluvial rivers (sinuosity, wavelength-to-width ratios, fatness skewness). discuss the (ir)relevance scale our experiments, which, spite being laminar flow regime likely affected by surface tension effects, are capable shedding light into processes driving formation evolution supraglacial channels. suggest that sinuosity growth is function velocity interplay between vertical incision driven temperature differences ice. In absence recrystallization (depositional analog rivers), bends more be downstream-skewed lower sinuosities.

Meandering rivulets on a plane: a simple balance between inertia and capillarity.

Experiments on streams of water flowing down a rigid substrate have been performed for various plate inclinations and flow rates, and we focused on the regime of stationary meanders. The outcome is that (i) the flow is highly hysteretic--the shape of the meanders varies with flow rate only for increasing flow rates, and the straight rivulet regime does not appear for decreasing flow rate, and (...

Clouds enhance Greenland ice sheet meltwater runoff

The Greenland ice sheet has become one of the main contributors to global sea level rise, predominantly through increased meltwater runoff. The main drivers of Greenland ice sheet runoff, however, remain poorly understood. Here we show that clouds enhance meltwater runoff by about one-third relative to clear skies, using a unique combination of active satellite observations, climate model data ...

General mechanism for the meandering instability of rivulets of Newtonian fluids.

A rivulet flowing down an inclined plane often does not follow a straight path, but starts to meander spontaneously. Here we show that this instability is the result of two key ingredients: fluid inertia and anisotropy of the friction between rivulet and substrate. Meandering only occurs if the motion normal to the instantaneous flow direction is more difficult than parallel to it. We give a qu...

Lava and Ice Interaction on Mars: Application of Terrestrial Observations and Laboratory Simulations;

Observations of terrestrial examples of lava and ice interaction have been combined with laboratory simulations to provide a framework for investigating lava and ice interaction on Mars. Identification of largeand small-scale characteristic features will indicate whether large quantities of meltwater were trapped or whether lava flow confinement occurred. These features should also enable the d...

On the breakup of fluid rivulets

We study the stability of rivulets on horizontal substrates. The implemented model includes the effects of capillarity, fluid-solid interaction, and gravity if appropriate, within the framework of the lubrication approximation. We find that the results compare favorably with those in literature, in the regime where previous analyses are valid. By isolating the effect of van der Waals interactio...
